Birthday's have always been about the weekend. An awesome, radical adventure with the best of friends; great food; and getting outside. True birthday weekenders are a dying breed as with each aging year the weekending becomes less and less of a priority with life's other "priorities" taking the front seat. The one night, 2-hour dinner meet up with friends doesn't quite satisfy the quench. There's a feeling with each coming year to prove you've still got it, you've still got what it takes to push yourself that extra mile, to do something to top off year's past. Birthday weekends are the time to celebrate and start your next year of life with a bang of bad-A-ness.

We got lucky with this one and TK was all gung ho to get out of the city with us. We got off to a little later start than expected, surprise, but it ended up being perfect night riding desert conditions--yes, it is still February. We rode through the night following the spiraling road leading up to Jacob's Chair until we found the perfect soft sandy spot to lay our bivy's. We woke to views of canyons as fas as the eye can see and in a bed of petrified wood chips. The ride ended with the final ascent to the base of Jacob's Chair and masterminding plans for future climbing lines. Of course the descent was the sweet reward and end to a quick desert bikepacking escape. Cheers to another year TK!

SE UT WINTER.

There's something magical about snow covered grounds, I've loved them since I was little. Granted a big part of growing up in VA is with a mere 1 in of snow either equals a 2 hour delay or no school for the day :) I remember during the winters going to bed every night wishing the next morning I'd wake up to fresh fallen snow. My friends and I would plan after school, <<don't forget before you go to bed 1)turn your PJ's inside out 2)do the snow dance>>. Moving out west normal amounts of snowfall were what my child self would've considered a blizzard!

As we've started spending more and more time in Southeast UT, it has grown to be one of my favorite places to spend winters as well. The blend of red and green with an added white element resulting in new methods for exploring the country.

RECAPTURE.

There's no better way to roam than by clinking chain and knobby treads cruising through rock and dirt. There's always more to explore in this country, further distances to be travelled, and it's never short of an epic view. Like my childhood reads of Cam Jansen I just want to say "click" and hope my photographic memory keeps the view in my mind forever, ha I wish...thank goodness for cameras right?!

ROAM.

photo-1

We've been busy, busy bees at Roam Industry! This past weekend was spent with The Good Line and a few close friends filming the beautiful country of Southeast Utah.

9 of us spent the night at the old Hyand Hotel,  built in the late 1800's. It was movie perfect, big old house, creaky floors, heavy rain and lightning rattling the windows, not to mention it was Halloween night. Oh, and an old man had even died in the place years ago. The moans from the closet or the heavy creeks in the hall weren't what kept us awake, more so the fear that all the roads and trails might be too muddy to bike. Luck for us mother nature was on our side, providing us with perfect weather for filming and we all ended the weekend exhausted, satisfied, and loaded with awesome footage!

CATTLE.

IMG_1143 IMG_1168 IMG_1194 IMG_1202 IMG_1205

Spent the weekend down in Çello with family, cattle and foraging. R & J were down with their kids, and Çello being the playground it is Claire & Liam lived it up. Boots, belt buckle, rifle, and shotgun these kids lived up the experience. Climbing hay bails to find secret onion stashes, spotting bucks in the hay field, climbing trees, collecting, riding in the pickup, finding G-pa's candy stash, and learning to climb fences...to be a kid again!

The weekend ended with a deer for winter store, refilled vessels, and most importantly converting the ones we love to biking....can you spot a cowboy hat on the bike?

The final weekend before the long winter of no weekend adventures (i.e. ankle surgery and 6 month recovery) was spent with close friends. Getting feedback on keep it like a secret, sleepover at the cabin (the see-saw from our wedding was still fully functional), and practicing our shooting skills. Lucky with weather we had all sunny and blue skies.

FLASH.

IMG_0960 IMG_0965 IMG_0944

In Southeast Utah with heavy rains come flash floods.  We headed out to Montezuma Canyon to see if we could catch a glimpse at the rushing water. We didn't spot any flashes, however we did find chocolate milk water run offs, rock falls, and a reconstructed Kiev.

RIM WALKING & CLIMB SCOUTING.

IMG_0973 IMG_0996 IMG_1026 IMG_1020

Abajo Mountain means "the low mountain." Appropriately named as the low storm clouds cloaked the mountains throughout the weekend. We made our way along the mountain east rim exploring rock bands for new climbs. Overcasting clouds, cool temperatures, escaping setting sun rays, and the smell sage and pine made for an idyllic night walk.

In the wake of a brewing spring storm the afternoon was spent playing cowboy, and learning the ropes from a real one Dustin's dad. The farm filled with trucks, tractors, gates, and prodders unsurprisingly stands as a grand playground for fun to be had by all.

HART'S DRAW.

Stone throw away from town are drastic canyons, red rock, and tons of ground for exploring. Perfect for Sunday exploration.

GOOD HOPE.

We took the weekend and went on an exploration: map, truck, gear and all. Our plan was to take the Blue Notch Canyon to Good Hope Bay, an appendage to Lake Powell. The only problem was there was no beta, no mile markers to look for, no milage. All we had was a Forest map showing us the general area, and the name Blue Notch giving us a unique landmark in the red rock to look for.

True explorers we headed off down 95, me wide-eyed and gapping at the amazing red rock towers, canyon, landmarks, and unimaginable country. Dustin tapping his memory of the same landmarks to figure out where we were on the map. There is so much untouched country, I only wish we had more time to explore (or re-visit for D)!

Natural bridges, Fry Canyon, Cheesebox, Jacob's Chair, then there was the break of a Blue Notch in the canyon and we found our road. Surprisingly, the road was well maintained, but still fun dirt road driving, weaving up the canyon, with amazing views. At the end of the road we found the bay, choose our beach to camp on and set off in the kayak.

We spent the weekend paddling, bouldering, scrambling, eating good food, sleeping under the stars well full moon, finding seashells, chucking rocks, and enjoying each other's company.

Most importantly the truck made it and is still kickin'.
